Still-Life A40/B1
Celebrating the metropolis
The A40/B1 motorway, also known as the Ruhr motorway, is a special kind of boulevard. It connects the cities, districts and people of the metropolis along a 60-kilometre stretch. It’s the region’s main traffic artery and has among the highest traffic volume of any motorway in Germany. That traffic will come to a standstill for six hours as part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.
The people of the Ruhr metropolis and their guests and visitors will hold a unique celebration of everyday life right in the middle of this major motorway July 18, 2010, from 11:00 to 17:00 when the road will be blocked for traffic in both directions. The track from Dortmund to Duisburg will become the world’s longest banquet table. 20,000 tables spread over 60 kilometres will become a meeting place of cultures, generations and nationalities. At the same time, people will be able to ride the opposite track from Duisburg to Dortmund using anything that has wheels but no engine.
Everyone is part of everyday culture
Participants will be creating the programme on the Ruhr highway since each of the 20,000 tables is also a stage where they can show the performance of their choosing. Take the Ruhr’s everyday culture on the road! Whether they’re rock bands or church choirs, pigeon fanciers or football clubs, groups playing cards or hip-hoppers: Residents are invited to actively become part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.
The program will be supplemented by performances at the theatres of the seven cities on the A40/B1 - Duisburg, Oberhausen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Bochum and Dortmund. In addition, state, regional and local sports organizations will showcase the diversity of sports in the Ruhr: They'll invite people to get in motion at special "sports islands" along the track.
