How has the Ruhr district changed over the years? How do artists see the Ruhr Metropolis now? And what's this about 134 windows? Insights, outlooks and retrospectives form the common theme of the "Ruhr Views" exhibition where eleven artistic works by well-known photographers reveal the kaleidoscope of Ruhr reality. Hilla Becher, Laurenz Berges, Joachim Brohm, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Andreas Gursky, Jitka Hanzlová, Candida Höfer, Matthias Koch, Elisabeth Neudörfl, Jörg Sasse and Thomas Struth were invited by curator Thomas Weski and the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe to take part in this photographic project that will be on display from 24 April to 24 October 2010 in the SANAA Building at the Zeche Zollverein World Heritage Site.

Ten artists identified motifs specifically for the project. Their present-day views on a region in change are supplemented by images from Bernd and Hilla Becher that open up perspectives on the past. The invited photographers are all closely associated with the Ruhr. They either live and work here or have been artistically involved with the region for a long time. Some artists concentrated their work on one location whilst others travelled throughout the Ruhr region and sought out motifs that could stand for the Ruhr Metropolis as well as having general relevance. They also employed rather unusual methods: for example, Matthias Koch used an old fire engine to position his camera high up and photograph the area from surprising angles.

The location of the exhibition itself also offers surprising perspectives. The SANAA Building, a white cube with 134 window openings, is the first new building on the former Zollverein colliery site. Through both its subject matter and its unusual exhibition location, the "Ruhr Views" photography project follows the RUHR.2010 theme of "Change through culture - culture through change". The views of the Ruhr taken by the photographers set in a venue with windows that look out over the Ruhr region make a visit to the exhibition a powerful experience.

The bilingual exhibition catalogue provides an in-depth exploration of the exhibition themes that adds to the visitor’s understanding. The project partner Folkwang University offers a further bridge into the theme with a series of "Ruhr Views" lectures giving insights into current photographic perspectives.
